Overview of Hypnotherapy for Problems and Difficulties in Relationships

The use of hypnosiswithin hypnotherapycan be a very effective aid in overcoming problems and difficulties that are getting in the way of a satisfyingand fulfilling relationshipwith a partner, friend or colleague. There are a variety of approaches which hypnotherapistscan use depending upon the specific nature of the problem.

Sometimes a relationship has the potential to be satisfying and fulfilling for both parties, but feelings of insecurityabout the relationship can generate negative thoughts, feelings and behaviourswhich can erode the feelings that people have for each other eg:

  • Thoughts and feelings of possessiveness and jealousyin relation to a partner.

  • Constantly interpreting their behaviour negatively eg: as if they are showing undue interest in others.

  • Feelings and thoughts of anxiety and insecurity when out socially with a partner.

  • Constant fears about a partner leaving for someone else.

  • Unable to rest and get on with life when a partner is absent, due to unfounded suspicionsof what they might be doing.

  • An inability to value yourself and your own worth in a relationship.

Ultimately such thoughts, feelings and behaviours could destroy the relationship if the issues are not addressed and positive change brought about.

Sometimes such negative patterns of behaviour have their origin in past experiences having been cheated on and let down in a prior relationship. This may have created feelings of low self-esteem, insecurity and vulnerability which result in misplaced thoughts and behaviours to protect the person from a repeat of the earlier experience. Ironically of course they are likely to have the opposite effect and will undermine the relationship. At times there may not be any prior experience of being let down by a partner, but due to low self-esteem and confidence a person may feel insecure in a relationship.

Issues of insecurity and being unable to hold your own in a relationship can also occur in friendships and in relationships with colleagues in the work setting.

Assessment for Hypnotherapy for Problems and Difficulties in Relationships

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Discussing the history of the present relationship and the patterns of interaction.

  • Identifying past patterns in previous relationships.

  • A realistic assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the relationship and what each partner brings to it.

  • Identifying problematic, thoughts, feelings and behaviours and the situations which trigger them.

  • Identifying individual positive qualities, strengths and skills.

  • Identifying any practical positive changes that need to occur in the relationship to be initiated by either party.

While no relationship is perfect and there is always scope to nurture a relationship so both parties will feel more satisfied and fulfilled this approach assumes that both parties mutually agree that apart from the negative, destructive behaviours the relationship has the potential to be sound and satisfying. There is thus a basic commitment by both people in wanting to make the relationship work. Sometimes I just see one individual as part of the assessment. Occasionally if it is considered desirable and if both people are in agreement I have seen both parties and implemented individual programmes of hypnotherapy. If there are more fundamental intrinsic problems with a relationship I may suggest that people seek the services of an agency such as "Relate".

Programme of Hypnotherapy for Relationship Problems and Difficulties

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help create change. This could include:

  • If applicable, addressing the origin/cause of feelings of insecurity, possibly making use of regression and reframing negative experiences relating to previous relationships.

  • Reinforcing perception of the acknowledged positive features of the relationship.

  • Boost individual self-esteem and self-confidence.

  • Strengthen individual perception of self-worth in the relationship.

  • De-sensitise to the trigger situations which have generated negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours in the past.

  • Agree practical changes to be initiated by either partner as appropriate which would help the relationship to develop positively.

  • Develop greater feelings of calm and security in general and specifically when in social situations with a partner.

  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording on CD to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.

The number of sessions required is likely to be four to six depending upon the range and complexity of the issues involved. For full details of my fees please click here .
