As a former lecturer in a College I am well aware of the anxiety and stress which tests and exams can cause. I often came across students who got "exam nerves" resulting in loss of sleep, anxiety which prevented them from effective study, the anxiety ultimately preventing them from achieving their full potential in a test or exam . In the worst scenarios a student would complain about their mind "going blank" or feeling like they were in a state of "paralysis" in exam and test situations.

I have also come across many people who have experienced similar difficulties in more practical test or training situations. Taking a driving test is the classic example but there are many others. Some people can find it difficult just learning to drive in the presence of a driving instructor because of anxiety over their skill and performance.

Whether you are a school, college or university student or anyone else wishing to achieve the performance you desire hypnotherapy can help with all these difficulties, reducing the experience of fear and anxiety and helping you to feel much more confident in these situations. It can also help in enhancing memory and recall , and study skills which of course will also be beneficial to exam and test performance.

Drawing on my experience as a lecturer and trainer I can also provide practical guidance about exam and study strategies and skills.

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Considering your own specific motivations.


  • Discussing your thoughts and emotions which you experience when you are in exam, test or assessment situations.


  • Identifying any earlier experiences which have contributed to anxieties in exam, test or assessment situations.


  • Identifying trigger factors in exam, test or assessment situations.


  • Exploring difficulties and factors related to memory and recall.


  • Reviewing personal stategies and skills related to study, memory and recall.


  • Reviewing personal stategies and skills related to exam, test and assessment situations.


  • Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to relax which hypnotherapy can strengthen.


  • Identifying relaxing/calming and relevant successful past general experiences in your life which can be used positively within hypnotherapy.


  • Consider your own perceptions and feelings about yourself.


  • Consideration of how people around you are affecting you eg: sources of support.



Programme of Hypnotherapy to Overcome Anxiety/Fear About Exams/Tests and to Improve Memory and Study

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help you to overcome fear/phobia about exams/tests and to improve memory and study skills and effectiveness. This could include:

  • Building upon your motivations. Positive motivations are an important tool for creating change.


  • If an early experience is relevant we will address this to enable you to let go of any negative associations leaving you free to move on.


  • Work to give you more awareness and control over your emotions.


  • Replace fearful/anxious thoughts and emotions with calming/relaxing/peaceful ones.


  • Reframe how you perceive, experience and think about the problematic situations.


  • Strengthen positive practical strategies for dealing with fear/anxiety.


  • Enhance memory and recall skills.


  • Enhance study strategies, skills and effectiveness


  • If relevant reframe your perceptions of how others are viewing and evaluating you.


  • Where necessary strengthen your general levels of self-esteem and confidence.


  • Reduce negative thoughts and doubts and reinforce your confidence in your ability to succeed.


  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording on CD to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.

The number of sessions required is likely to be three to four depending upon the degree of the anxiety and the complexities involved. To simply enhance memory, recall or study skills may only require two sessions. For full details of fees please click here .
