The use of hypnosis within hypnotherapy can be very effective in the treatment of many types of phobia including agoraphobia and social phobia. There are a variety of approaches which hypnotherapists can use within hypnotherapy depending upon the nature of the problem. Firstly, let us take a look at the nature of phobias
A phobia refers to a fear of a particular object, activity or situation. People may develop a fear in relation to very different types of object. For example a phobia in relation to a particular animal is quite common eg cats, mice, spiders. Activities or situations which may become the focus of a phobia also vary enormously eg: flying, heights, getting in a lift. These are known as Specific Phobias . Other phobias may relate more to the social nature of the situation eg: fear of blushing, eating or speaking in public. These are referred to as a Social Phobia . Sometimes a Social Phobia can become generalised so that a person fears all situations in which they have to interact with others.
When faced with the phobic object, activity or situation people are aware of various distressful thoughts, emotions/feelings and physical symptoms:
Agoraphobia is an example of a phobia which can be very debilitating for a person and the quality of their life. People with agoraphobia avoid such situations as busy streets in towns and cities, supermarkets and other large stores, theatres, etc. In the worst cases a person will feel unable to leave home, even if accompanied by a relative or friend. They will often have experienced a "panic attack" involving extreme anxiety symptoms in one of these situations in the past. Part of the problem then becomes the fear of experiencing other panic attacks in similar situations, the fear becoming generalised.
People who suffer from phobias are usually well aware of the irrational nature of their fear and will think rationally about their problem. The difficulty for them to bring about change is because the source and emotional content of the phobia is usually within the unconscious mind which is not easily accessible to the intervention of our conscious rational thoughts. This is where hypnosis within hypnotherapy can help as a hypnotherapist is able to work with you in working directly with the unconscious mind.
This is far from being a comprehensive list of phobias but it does list the most common ones. Please also note that the technical words used to describe some phobias vary ie: there are synonyms.
