While there is no harm for most people in an occasional alcoholic drink, we live in times where alcohol is impacting negatively on the lives of many people. Drinking alcohol is a habit that can easily escalate with consequent costs to our lives: health, finances, personal relationships, our effectiveness and potential in our work and personal lives. Most people with alcohol related health problems would not be diagnosed as "alcoholic" but are people who have regularly drunk in excess of the recommended limits. Problems may not be obvious at first but can emerge after a number of years: various forms of cancer, liver damage, heart attacks, high blood pressure, poor immune system and reduced fertility. There are significant dangers involved in drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Health can also be impacted through weight gainsdue to the extra calories taken in by drinking, beer, larger, wines and spirits.
There are also many psychological and social costs: fatigue, increased anxiety, depression, poor sleep, poor memory and sexual problems, to mention just a few. The people that I have helped have often spoke about the negative impact on their close personal relationships due to becoming argumentative or aggressive due to the irritabilty and lack of self-control that alcohol can create. Some people have also talked about situations where they have put themselves at physical risk either because they are not in full control of their movements/co-ordination or have put themselves at risk through their behaviour with strangers. Some have spoken about the risks to their employment and career caused by inappropriate behaviour induced by the lower inhibitions resulting from alcohol.
The reasons for occasional drinking turning into habitual excessive drinking are obviously very varied. In an age when stress is on the increase some people slip into habitual drinking as an attempt to relieve stress / unwind after a hard day's work. Needless to say this is not an effective strategy and it is highly desirable to impliment more positive strategies for relieving stress. Others may slip into habitual drinking through work. Some work environments entail many business meals, also involving significant consumption of alcohol. Other work environments encourage social drinking after work. In either case peer pressure can significantly add to the difficulties of controlling alcohol intake. Drinking at home prior to going out for the night to continue drinking is an issue that affects many young people these days. Binge drinkingis an extreme version of this.
The above are just some of the problems and issues which excessive habitual drinkingcan cause. If you wish to read more detail about harmful effects of alcohol with detailed figures you can visit the NHS web pages below:
Many people will not be experiencing the more extreme problems mentioned above. However, if you wish to reduce or stop your alcohol intake to bring about positive benefits for your physical, emotional and psychological well being, it makes sense to act sooner rather than later.
A thorough assessment is essential to determine the factors which are affecting you and to devise a programme of hypnotherapy tailored to your individual needs.
An assessment may include some of the following:
Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to control or stop alcohol intake. This could include:
The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.
The number of sessions required is likely to be three to four depending upon the range and complexity of the issues involved. For full details of my fees please click here .
